This course explores photography as an art form and is designed to be taught with the minimun of equipment.  Students are expected to develop their understanding of the expressive nature of the formal elements of art and design: colour, form, texture. line, pattern, tone. Research into ways other photographers or artists across times, cultures and societies have undertaken studies.

AS Photography

The Advanced subsidary (AS)  allows students the opportunity to express and develop their creative and artistic skills in Fine Art photography. Research is an essential element within this course and underpins all of the practical work
Students are required to produce two practical units which are supported by their research journals.

The AS comprises two units. One of which is set by the examining body and internally assessed and externally moderated.

A2 Art & Design Photography

Students will be expected to develop a knowledge and understanding of the uses of light as the main element in photography, experiment, with different film types, chemicals, dark room processes and techniques. Use digital and analogue media to manipulate images through scanners, computers, photocopiers, digital and film cameras. Show understanding of composition, angles and view points to produce interesting and thought provoking images.

Course Length: 1 Year
Qualification: GCE A2


This course follows on from the AS Level and allows students to broaden their theoretical and research skills of Fine Art Photography. The work is less directed and students are encouraged to develop their own ideas.

ABC Awards
Course Length: 1 Year
Qualification: Level 1&2

Level 1 Certificate

This qualification is suitable for students who wish to acquire the introductory knowledge and skills required to develop their photographic skills.

Level 2 is aimed at students who wish to gain more advanced knowledge and skills within this discipline and those who wish to broaden their portfolios.
