Certificate of Higher Education: Understanding Visual Arts
Immersing yourself in the world of art, close to home and from around the world, under the guidance of expert tutors, is an empowering and intensely enjoyable experience. It opens your eyes and expands your mind. It teaches clear thinking, effective writing and conveys a deeper understanding of art. You'll learn about art from painting, sculpture and architecture to printmaking, photography, and video.
This new programme, offered in the community by a leading London university, offers a part‐time, flexible route to a degree. Funding is available.
Certificate of Higher Education in Understanding Visual Arts – key points

This is a nationally‐recognised University of London qualification that is the equivalent of the first year of a BA degree. It looks great on your CV.

There are no formal entrance requirements ‐ it is a flexible, part‐ time programme designed to meet the needs of students who have not previously had the opportunity to study at university level.

It is a direct route into degree study, providing exemption from the first year of Birkbeck's BA degrees in History of Art, and Arts and Humanities as well as the Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management

The course begins in January 2012 at Rosetta Art Centre, and runs on Tuesdays (9.45am to 3pm) through to late June. The second year of the programme runs from October 2012 to June 2013 in the evenings in Central London.

It is a part‐time programme. This means 4‐5 hours of contact time per week, plus a further 10‐12 hours per week of independent study.

Funding is available. Means‐tested government funding is available that covers the full fees of eligible students. Students in receipt of means‐tested benefits or with a household income of up to £31,420 may be eligible for full or partial government fee grants. The cost for self‐funding students is £750 for the 2011‐12 academic year.

Study without debt. You may have heard that there will be a sharp rise in university fees from 2012‐13. If you enrol on this programme now, and progress directly onto a degree upon completion, you will be able to complete the certificate AND the degree at current fee rates plus inflation. Eligible students will continue to be able to apply for government grants to cover fees.
