March 2011 - 'Magic & Alchemy' exhibtion at Stratford Old Town Hall

An exhibition of monoprinting by the Professional Development Group.

“I’ve always had a love of printmaking because of the magic and alchemy of it all.

You never really know how it’s going to be until you turn the paper over.” – Tracy Emin

Over the course of five weeks members of Rosetta Art Centre’s Professional Development Group ventured on a journey of magic and alchemy, of experimentation with mark-making and colour within a medium that, as Tracy Emin says, never quite turns out how you think it might when you lift up the paper.

Monoprinting is about the unexpected, about taking what comes and working with it, changing it, cropping it and drawing or painting into it to create something that works as a piece of art, whether it be figurative or abstract, without losing the unique self-expression that comes from the individual artist, using the strengths and subtleties of mark and tone that they alone produced.

The work in this exhibition is the result of this process.  Some of the artists have developed their experiments into a series of themed works such as landscape, natural form, movement, while others have produced stand-alone works, each with their own mood and story to tell.

Either way, all of the work on display has emerged from the magic and alchemy that we’ve taken as the title for the exhibition, a mixture of play and deliberation, of tone, texture, line and mark-making….of lifting up the paper, taking what comes and working with it.

Magic and Alchemy is a free exhibition and will be opened by Cllr Bryan Collier at Stratford Old Town Hall on Thursday 3 March 2011 6-8pm. The exhibition runs until 31st March.

Imagining Identity is an international photography project that was written and managed by Rosetta Art Centre (RAC).  The project was a collaboration between the Iranian Youth Development Association (IYDA) from London, UK, the Omid-e-Mehr Foundation (OeM) in Terhan, Iran and RAC London, UK. Participants from IYDA and

the OeM rehabilitation centre were responding to the same brief of creativelyexpressing their feelings about identity through photography. The resulting work is of exceptional quality and will tour as an exhibition through Iran, the UK and the USA.  A selection of the exhibition is currently on showat the Greenwich Heritage Centre as part of Black History Month.  To find out more about this project please follow this link.. http://talesofthings.com/search/?q=iranian+youth
