Imagining Identity is an exhibition that brings together carefully chosen works from a project by Rosetta Art Centre that was delivered to over twenty young members of varied ages and backgrounds from the Omid Foundation in Tehran, Iran with artist Mehrdad Asgari and the Iranian Youth Development Association in London, UK with artist Omid Salehi.
Through photography the young people examine how they think about themselves and engage with the world around them, addressing the question of identity. Particularly through teenage years they develop their self-image through seeing how others interact with them, messages they try to share and their relationships with parents, carers, peers, teachers...
The exhibition celebrates and emphasizes how their individual identity is unique and the factors that shape their lives. It combines their genetic being, cultural diversity, religious and linguistic backgrounds, their interests and abilities. It is affected by where and how they live, the country of their parents and grandparents, and what they do with their lives.
The fascinating selection of images and stories in these exhibitions provide an opportunity to discern more about Iran from outside and within.
