Watercolour painting offers a multitude of possibilities ranging from soft, subtle paintings to bolder, mixed media experimental work, from wet on wet techniques to building and layering of colour.

Combine traditional watercolour techniques with experimental ideas for individual and expressive paintings. Students will get the chance to experiment and produce expressive, exciting paintings using techniques and tools to bring out individual vision through the wide possibilities of watercolour painting, including wet on wet, wet on dry, resist and low relief textural effects techniques.

Current Courses:

City & Guilds Watercolour Painting Award Level 2

Start Date: Week beginning January 9th 2012
Course Length: 10 weeks, one session per week
Session Length: 3 hours
Location: Rosetta Art Centre
Course cost: £140 (£95 non active concessions / £80 full concession)

This course is great for an introduction into working with Watercolour Painting. You get to choose one unit of study from the following list:

- Design
- Sampling
- Landscape: Garden or Woodland scene
- Townscape or Building Study
- Waterscape
- Still Life
- Portraiture

By the end of the course you will have:

- Learnt about studio practice, including care of tools and health and safety in the painting studio.

- Developed an understanding of various watercolour techniques that can be used.

- Experimented with some of the various watercolour techniques.

Course level and skills required:

This course is open to anybody with an interest in watercolour painting, from complete beginners to the more advanced learners who want to improve their skills further. You will be given simple demonstrations supported with hand-outs. No interview is needed to access this course.

When I’ve completed the course, what else can I do to improve my skills?

Rosetta Art Centre offers more advanced courses in Watercolour Painting, all awarded by City & Guilds at Level 2 or 3, for you to progress onto. The 2011-12 programmes include a one year Certificate course at level 2, or a two year Certificate course at level 3. This Level 2 Award can contribute towards a Level 2 Certificate, making this the natural progression route.


City & Guilds Watercolour Painting Certificate Level 2

Start Date: Week beginning January 9th 2012
Course Length: 36 weeks, two sessions per week
Session Length: 3 hours
Location: Rosetta Art Centre
Course cost: £485 (£293 non active concessions / £185 full concession)

This is a more comprehensive course where you will study four units. There are two manditory units (Design and Sampling) and you can also choose two more from the following list:

- Landscape: Garden or Woodland scene
- Townscape or Building Study
- Waterscape
- Still Life
- Portraiture

By the end of the course you will have:

- Learnt about studio practice, including care of tools and health and safety in the painting studio.

- Developed an understanding of various watercolour techniques that can be used.

- Experimented with many of the various watercolour techniques.

- Researched a number of watercolour artists and their work to inform your own developing practice.

Course level and skills required:

City & Guilds Watercolour Painting Award Level 3

Start Date: Week beginning January 9th 2012
Course Length: 10 weeks, one sessions per week
Session Length: 3 hours
Location: Rosetta Art Centre
Course cost: £150 (£100 non active concessions / £90 full concession)

As a Level 3 program, this course covers the units in much greater depth, with a higher standard of work being produced.There are two manditory units (Design and Sampling) and you can also choose two more from the following list:

- Design
- Sampling
- Townscape with Buildings and Figures
- Natural Form
- Interiors
- Reflective Surfaces
- Facial Expressions

By the end of the course you will have:

- Learnt about studio practice, including care of tools and health and safety in the painting studio.

- Developed an in depth understanding of various watercolour painting techniques that can be used.

- Experimented with the various watercolour painting techniques to the point of developing your own emerging style of practice.

- Researched in greater depth a number of watercolour artists and their work to inform your own developing practice.

Course level and skills required:

As this is a more advanced course, a Level 2 qualification is normally required, although in some cases where previous experience at the required level can be demonstrated, this would not be necessary.

When I’ve completed the course, what else can I do to improve my skills?

Rosetta Art Centre offers a Level 3 Certificate, which the Level 3 Award contributes towards.


City & Guilds Watercolour Painting Certificate Level 3

Start Date: Week beginning January 9th 2012
Course Length: 72 weeks (two academic years), two sessions per week
Session Length: 3 hours
Location: Rosetta Art Centre
Course cost: £630 (£546 non active concessions / £330 full concession)

As a Level 3 program, this course covers the units in much greater depth, with a higher standard of work being produced.There are two manditory units (Design and Sampling) and you can also choose two more from the following list:

- Townscape with Buildings and Figures
- Natural Form
- Interiors
- Reflective Surfaces
- Facial Expressions

By the end of the course you will have:

- Developed an in depth understanding of various watercolour painting techniques that can be used.
